Hyper-V in Windows Server 2016: Best New Features

Microsoft is going to launch its major breakthrough in the next release of Windows Server family i.e. Windows Server 2016. Since everyone knows the main reason behind deploying Window Server operating system is its foremost Virtualization technology, Hyper-V, which upgrades with every release of server OS. The latest version includes Hyper-V with enhanced and improved features which will provide better virtualization environment. Hence, in this blog I will shed some light on Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V features.

Containers – Windows container and Hyper-V container

Containers feature allow users to run many isolated applications as containers on a single physical machine. Windows container allows isolated applications to be run on shared host operating system whereas Hyper-V container allows isolated applications to be run inside virtual machines. Besides, in Windows container, base OS image should match the host OS version since they share a same kernel, this results in dependency. While Hyper-V isolates its containers from host OS version as well as from kernel, it allows you to run VMs within VMs which results in nested virtualization.

Shielded Virtual Machines

The most noticeable Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V features is Shielded Virtual Machines which allow users to protect their VMs against access by administrators in private as well as public cloud. Besides, Hyper-v perform virtual hard disk encryption with virtual TPM chip and BitLocker which encrypt VMs’ content as well. Shielded Virtual Machine feature ensures that your data is secure regardless of host environment.

Improved storage resiliency

Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V features bring vast improvement in terms of storage failure since Hyper-V of Win Server 2016 can easily cope up with storage outage problems. Unlike Windows Server 2012, if storage fabric fails then Virtual Machine do not crash. Instead, it will go into pause state until the storage connection become available again. This windows server 2016 hyper-v feature enables virtual machines to become responsive automatically from critical pause state.

PowerShell Direct

PowerShell is an automation and scripting tool, Win server 2016 provides PowerShell Direct feature which enables you to execute PowerShell commands for virtual machine from host operating system. Besides, there is no need of network availability or configuration for VM but credentials are needed. This new Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V features will be applicable only if host operating system is Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 and guest OS is Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016. To deploy Virtual Machines via PowerShell, execute below command as administrator.
Enter-PSSession -VMName VMName
