How to Resize Partition using Disk Management in Windows

Microsoft included inbuilt functionality known as Disk Management tool that makes it easier to extend or shrink a partition/volume of a hard drive in Windows 8, 8.1, 7, and Vista,. This feature can help you in creating a new partition if you have some spare space in any drive. In this blog, I will provide steps which explain how to resize- shrink or extend partition using disk management.

How to resize partition using disk management

Inbuilt Windows Disk management utility will let you shrink and expand hard drive’s volume so that new partition can be created easily. Steps are given below which explain how to resize partition using disk management in Windows 8, 7.

Steps to shrink a volume

Step 1: Go to Disk management by pressing Windows key + X or by typing diskmgmt.msc in Run box (press Windows key + R to open Run box) as shown below.

Step 2: Once Disk management is open, right click on a drive which you want to shrink. Here, we are applying the shrink process in C: since it has some extra space. Now select Shrink Volume.

Step 3: After clicking Shrink Volume, a new screen will open which shows drive’s size before and after shrink. The windows will ask you to enter the amount of space to shrink in MB (1024MB = 1GB) so that resize partition using disk management can be achieved.

The Shrink dialog box contains the following information:
Total size before shrink in MB- Shows the total size of a volume in MB.
Size of available shrink space in MB- Shows the available space that can be shrunk. It doesn’t show the total free space, instead it displays the removable space which doesn’t include data reserved for MFT, temporary files, page files etc.
Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB- By default it shows the maximum amount of space that can be removed. You need to enter the value by which the volume will be shrunk.
Total size after shrink in MB- Shows the amount of space left after the partition has been shrunk.

Step 4:
Once the shrink process has been done, the unallocated space will be shown which can be used to create a new partition by right click on it.

How to extend a volume

If you need more space on your primary partitions and logical drives then you can add unallocated space which are adjacent to them. Follow the steps which will highlight how to resize partition using disk management.

Step 1: To extend a partition, right click on a drive as shown below and select Extend Volume.

Step 2: In this step a new screen will be open, click next to proceed further.

Step 3: The new screen will ask you to enter the amount of space by which you want to extend the volume. Click next to proceed.

Step 4: In the last step click finish to complete the process.
