How to repair corrupt Excel file of MS Excel 2013

Most small businesses use Excel workbook to do plenty of work as Excel is a powerful application which can be used to evaluate large amount of data. Oftentimes, Windows users get stuck while opening Microsoft Excel workbook since they try to open a corrupt file with XLSX or XLS extension. In this blog, I will highlight how to repair corrupt excel file using manual method.

When users attempt to open unhealthy Excel workbook then it is more likely that they encounter an error ‘The file is corrupt and cannot be opened’ as shown below which shows that file has become inaccessible and cannot be opened.

Open and Repair to recover corrupt Excel file

Microsoft Excel 2013 has an inbuilt recovery feature i.e. Open and Repair which is used to recover corrupt or damaged XLSX file. This functionality opens an inaccessible file after repairing it. To recover corrupted excel file 2013, follow the below steps:

Step 1: Open MS Excel then browse corrupt Excel file as shown in below figure.

Step 2: When Open dialog box is displayed, click the arrow and choose Open and Repair option as shown in figure.

Step 3: The next screen will display two options Repair or Extract data to recover corrupted excel file 2013. Choose one of them:
Repair: Click Repair to recover as much of your work as possible.
Extract Data: Click Extract Data to extract data from the workbook if Excel was previously unable to repair the workbook.

Step 4: Once corrupt Excel file has been repaired, a new dialogue box will be displayed. Click close to complete the process.

AutoRecover to create a recovery file at regular intervals

Excel 2013 enables you to take preventive measures in order to protect your data during sudden power failure. You can now create unsaved Excel file on your system using inbuilt AutoRecover feature and use this file when the original file is deleted, get corrupt, or data on the original file could not be saved because of power outage. Follow the below steps to use this function.

Steps 1: Open Excel file in Microsoft Excel 2013. Go to File at the top left corner.

Step 2: Scroll down and select Options as shown below.

Step 3: After selecting Options, a new window will open i.e. Excel Options. On the left panel click on Save and on the right panel Check on the both checkbox as shown below:

Save AutoRecover information: You can specify time interval in which data will be saved in an unsaved file.
Keep the last autosaved version if I close without saving
AutoRecover file location can be changed according to user

Both files i.e. saved and unsaved Excel file will be saved in the location defined in above step.

What if manual methods fail to recover highly corrupt Excel file

Sometimes files are so damaged that any inbuilt utility fails to recover them. Besides, if AutoRecover feature has not been applied to Excel file then it becomes almost impossible to get back data from corrupt workbook. In such situation, a third party tool like Windows data recovery software is the best way to repair corrupt excel file, and retrieve permanent deleted files/folders within few clicks. The software supports all version of Windows OS including Windows 10, 8, 7, support all type of files including .XLS, .DOC, .JPG, .MPEG, .XLSX, .PPT etc., and compatible with all MS Excel versions that includes 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003.

Conclusion: The above post has explained how to repair corrupt excel file using inbuilt functions Open and Repair. In addition, inbuilt AutoRecover feature has been explained which allow users to persist data by setting time interval even if the lights goes out.
